Kuala Lumpur: the DL on KL

Day one was a confusing day; we had been awake since 5:30am the night before and aside from some small naps on the plane didn't sleep until 9:30pm the following day (that's with an 8hour time difference). Despite this we saw, felt and did a lot. Mainly: used the monorail for the first time (more on this later), visited a shrine, was the Chinese market in both its 11am quiet and evening buzz. We went for dinner, a drink, visited the famous pertronas towers to name but a few.
On day two we went to the Batu caves on the commuter train and had to climb almost 300 steep stairs to see the final shrine. This was no fun for Lucie and I who both have terrible vertigo. Going up was scary but coming down was even worse. After this feat of bravery we went to a bar on an old helicopter pad to see the views and obviously test our vertigo even more. It was new years eve so after a few cheekies there we went home, changed, found a dive bar (via monorail of course!) and sung in 2018 with fags and beers in the only way Lucie and I know how. We walked home listening to Taylor Swift.
On our last day we ate delicious South Indian food served on banana leaves which was a magic cure for hangover but ruined Lucie's shellac. We went to the bird park and saw lots of lovely birds and some wild monkeys. We got a massage as a new years day treat and cheersed in our last day of KL with a Chinese feast in the market.

Observations:
Everyone thought I was a man. Everyone. A woman asked Lucie if I was her brother. I got given the bill everywhere. When a g&t and a cocktail arrived the cocktail went straight to Lucie. I got served bigger portions than her too.

We read in a guide book that homosexuality isn't really allowed but there were a selection of discreet lesbians. Spotting the discrete lesbians was very fun. But they weren't very discreet.

A man let us walk out of the shop with two things we couldn't pay for as we'd run out of cash. When we came back the next day he said he was kidding about making us pay the next day. A lady in the street volunteered directions when we looked a bit confused at the map. We got undercharged for new years eve beer. Everyone is very friendly.

The monorail is the greatest mode of transport. I wish I could say more.

On the tube or train or monorail, instead of a ticket you get issued a plastic token with a chip in it which opens the door on the way in by tapping, and swallows it to open on the way out. This truly is the second greatest invention in the world. after the monorail.

Bartering is hard but Lucie got a fake kanken for £12.

Being vegetarian is hard in KL. Dairy free is fine, but there is a lot of surprise meat.

KL i give you 4*
